One of the things I do consistently with each team that comes to Haiti is lead devotionals. It’s always a great opportunity to focus our minds on Christ at the beginning or end of a day, and it’s uniquely encouraging to spend time praising God with one another. On a recent trip, we focused on some of God’s attributes from a few different passages of Scripture.
Ephesians 4:4–6: God Is One
“There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”
This powerful text lays out the unity of the Trinity—how God’s oneness bleeds into the salvation story as we believe through faith, the work of the Spirit, and receive salvation from the Son, who came at the Father’s will. That unity is the foundation for our unity with one another in the church.
Psalm 23: God Is Our Shepherd
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
This familiar psalm speaks of the Lord as a shepherd who guides, restores, and comforts us, providing for all our needs. This fresh reminder of God’s pastoral nature was a perfect way to start one morning.
Psalm 91: God Is Our Shelter
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.”
We spent some time praying on the truth that God is not only all powerful, but a shelter for those who turn to Him. Afterward, Dr. J suggested a song: “This Is the Day That the Lord Has Made,” and that truth couldn’t have been more timely after what we had just read.
Psalm 2 & Revelation 1: Jesus Is Lord
“Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.”“Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him.”
We concluded the week with the reminder that Christ is the gospel, and that being a Christian means submitting to Him. Jesus is the reason we do what we do each day, and we must remember to keep Him at the heart of our message, both to ourselves and to others. We believe Jesus is coming again, and that truth drives us to share the gospel with the world as we, Christ’s church, eagerly wait for His return.
