Mercy Network

We talk often about our Mercy Network, but have you ever wondered how this branch of our ministry began? The work our pastors do in their communities is a major extension of the heart of Connect 2 in Haiti—from distributing food to offering spiritual help, these men consistently and wholeheartedly invest in the people around them. And we invest in them because of it. The Mercy Network got its start when we began our partnership with Children's Hunger Fund. CHF's model is church-centric, so when they give food or supplies, they don't simply give to an organization and trust [...]

Stories of Rescue

It’s a new year, and we couldn’t be more encouraged! As we look forward to what God has in store for 2023, we also want to pause and remember the amazing work He’s done already. Below are stories from two former restavek kids—child slaves—who have found safety, peace, and hope through the ministry of God’s church in Haiti. Fabian We teach in our Mercy Network churches that abuse, in whatever form it takes, is unacceptable—to the degree that if you have a neighbor who's abusing a child, you need to be involved in putting an end to it. Well, [...]

A Haitian Christmas

Of every holiday, Christmas is the one celebrated most around the world. The reach of the gospel is far-ranging, and Jesus’ birth has shaped the traditions and customs of nations because of it. As we look forward to Christmas Day, we’re praying that the coming weeks would be a time of great hope and joy for God’s people in Haiti. Here are a few of the things you might see while celebrating a Haitian Christmas. “Merry Christmas” in Creole is “Jwaye Nwèl.” Early in December, Haitians decorate their homes with pine branches or Christmas trees. On Christmas Eve, people share [...]

Why Do We Give? Part 2

This Christmas season, we have every reason to give. As we thank the Lord for the blessings He’s given us—and praise Him for the daily opportunities we have to share hope with others—we’re looking at five more reasons Christians give freely, joyfully, and often. We give as a channel of God’s provision to others. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17). When we give to others, God is blessing them through us. Our giving is an extension of His kindness. We give as a practice of true religion. [...]

“Children’s Homes” v. “Orphanages”

“Children’s Homes” v. “Orphanages” If you’ve been around Connect 2 Ministries for long, you know that one of our primary ministries is caring for rescued restaveks in our Children’s Homes. The title, “restavek,” describes an abused child who lives with and serves a family that is not his or her biological family. The children have either been sold by their own family to another that is financially able to provide, or they are orphans with no family to care for them. Either way, they find themselves without stable parents before they ever come to our [...]

Giving Tuesday 2022

Degna Horton has served with Connect 2 Ministries for more than seven years, and she has worked extensively with Regency Lighting on many of our construction projects in Haiti. As we recognize Giving Tuesday, we asked Degna to share her thoughts on living life for others. My connection with C2M began in December 2015. I was employed at Regency Lighting at the time, working as the executive assistant responsible for coordinating social impact initiatives. This was around the time Greg Barshaw shared his vision for building a home and school that would house up to [...]

Why Do We Give? Part 1

Christians are givers. Polls consistently show that born-again believers are among the most generous groups of Americans, if not the most inclined to give, and we regularly rise to opportunities to share what we have with others. Giving is what we do. But why? As we head into the biggest giving season of the year, we’re taking a look at the many reasons believers cultivate and are known for a spirit of generosity. We give because we’ve received. “Freely you received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8). God has given us the ultimate gift by offering us salvation through His own Son. [...]

Four Pillars of C2M

Four Pillars of C2M In missions, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the needs of the people you serve. Without a clear strategy, you can exhaust your resources quickly. You’re never going to end hunger or meet every need in a community, so it’s critical to identify why you’re doing ministry in the first place. The goal is not to end suffering in Haiti. The goal is not even to change Haiti, but to change eternity. In fact, real gospel ministry means meeting someone in their suffering in order to communicate Jesus. Everything we do must [...]

How Do We Rescue Restaveks?

Most children who become slaves were not born into it. A parent dies, and the remaining parent gives their child to a family who promises to take care of him or her. Or a rural family with a lot of kids sends one of them with people who say they’ll take the child to Port-au-Prince—for a price. The kid might then be sold to an intermediary before being sold again to a family looking for a house servant. Although they were born to free parents, they find themselves in this situation because slavery is an [...]

The Birth of a Ministry

The 2010 earthquake changed Haiti in a way that can still be felt today. In a city of three million people, 300,000 were dead in the span of an afternoon. Tent cities became home to 1.8 million in the days that followed, and the persistent question became: “How do we make sense of this?” Tragedy raises questions that seem remote in easy times, but as Christians, we know that life and death are pressing realities in every moment, whether we think of them or not. Our ministry got its start in this context. Seeing the [...]
