Religion & Vodou

One evening, I started asking Jimmy some questions about Haitian culture. It’s funny, even though he speaks good English, there are times when we still have to repeat sentences in order to understand each other. This happens with Poyis as well. Learning a language and a different culture takes time. One thing we discussed was religion and Vodou. Jimmy shared with me that Vodou is still a big part of Haitian culture—I learned that most people, even pagans, believe Vodou exists. The easiest way for me to describe it is that Vodou is the work of [...]

Encouraging Progress

Jimmy and I were eating lunch one day when we started talking about the ministry. One of the things we discussed was his recent visit to a small children’s home called Sheepfold. Greg has helped support this home for some time, and we have a church in the US that almost completely sponsors their work. Sheepfold has thirty-two kids, and the site is located just outside of Delmas. C2M has some projects planned to help them expand in the future. As we discussed the work being done through this home, I couldn’t help but thank [...]

The Gospel Is Bigger

Poyis and I spent an hour together one evening as he updated me on all that was going on in his church and at the Children’s Homes. I am constantly reminded of the challenges of raising kids. I had three, but Poyis has 120. He does a remarkable job. The staff face issues that many parents would be familiar with—students occasionally neglecting responsibilities, pushing against restrictions—and they navigate these difficulties with grace. I have learned to pray the same things I’ve prayed for my own children for the kids in our homes, asking that God [...]

Join Us in Prayer

On Friday mornings, we typically share updates from Haiti—stories from a recent trip or highlights of ministry over the past months. Today, we want to share a specific update on how you can be praying with us for Connect 2 Ministries. Since the presidential assassination last summer, Haiti has struggled to stabilize. We continue to see health and food needs arising on a daily basis, and gang activity has been an added concern. Please pray that God would protect our children and ministry partners, and ask the Lord with us that Haiti’s November elections would bring [...]

After School Stories

One afternoon, Poyis asked Michelle, one of the American volunteers on our team, if she wanted to go with him to pick up the kids from school, and take them home on the school bus. These are not the children from our homes, but the kids who live in the surrounding neighborhood, all of them about three or four miles from the compound. Each day, someone drives the school bus to pick up these more than ninety children in the morning, and around 2:30 each day, takes them home to their families. I asked Michelle if [...]

2022 World Day Against Child Labor

June 12 is World Day Against Child Labor, and every year, this day gives us reason to seek the Lord while thanking Him for the work He has already done in Haiti. More than 120 children rescued from slavery now call our Regency and Mercy Children’s Homes their home, living in an environment where they are loved, educated, and given a hope-filled future, and all of this is from the Lord. One of these children is Mervius Elange. Elange is fifteen years old, and he joined our Children’s Home a few years ago. He spent much [...]

Part of God’s Family

I remember a special morning in Haiti when all 120 children from the Children’s Homes came to church dressed in their school uniforms. Poyis had invited them to take an active role in this Sunday’s service, and they were clearly excited to participate. Five or six of the students were up front leading music along with the usual adult musicians, and the rest of the children sat in the first three pews, making one large choir of various ages. The twenty-person secondary school choir sat in the front, and the 100+ elementary schoolers sat behind them. [...]

The God of Creation

Just before dark one evening, I noticed that some clouds were rolling in and it looked like rain. The wind picked up, and a humid breeze swept through the compound. The storm developed slowly, and once the sun had set, I sat outside my bedroom door on the porch and watched the lightning and the rain. It was peaceful. One of the nice things about the compound is that it feels like you are miles from city life. Earlier in the day, I had walked on the roof of one of the buildings and looked out [...]

Water Truck

Since 2014, Onaville, Haiti has been home to the Connect 2 Ministries compound. The Haitian government selected Onaville to relocate people from tent cities in Port-au-Prince after the 2010 earthquake, and it has been estimated that there are 800,000 people living in this barren area. All of these factors make Onaville a unique place for ministry. Our ministry is church centric, which means that everything we do flows out of a local congregation of believers. From the Children’s Homes to the Medical Clinic, all our ministries are run by the church. Along with providing a Christian [...]

His Ways Are Not Our Ways

Part of Connect 2 Ministries’ vision is not only to focus on the Children’s Homes and school, but also to support and equip Haitian pastors in their ministries. We do this partly by supplying food, but also by providing spiritual food and encouragement through in person training gatherings. My goal in a recent Mercy Network meeting was to get to know our pastors and spend some time in God’s Word. We started with introductions and spent the first part of our time getting acquainted. I told the men about my family and church ministry in [...]
