Walk for Restaveks (October 2022)

The title “restavek” has been used to describe an abused child who lives with and serves a family that is not his or her biological family. These children are either sold by their own family to another that is financially able to provide, or they are orphans with no family to care for them. The children are extremely vulnerable, living as modern-day slaves. The term, “restavek,” was once used as a verb. Meaning “to stay with,” it originally described the action of living alongside another, but it now communicates something very different. The majority of restaveks [...]

2022 World Humanitarian Day

Shaina Grill has served with Connect 2 Ministries for more than eight years, and she currently serves as our Sponsorship Program & Special Events Coordinator. As we recognize World Humanitarian Day, we asked Shaina to share her thoughts on living life for others. My first trip to Haiti was my first outreach trip ever. I didn’t grow up in the church, so by the time I came to Christ, I had a young family and didn’t have an interest in serving outside of my local congregation. When our middle daughter was a senior in high [...]

Encouraging Progress

Jimmy and I were eating lunch one day when we started talking about the ministry. One of the things we discussed was his recent visit to a small children’s home called Sheepfold. Greg has helped support this home for some time, and we have a church in the US that almost completely sponsors their work. Sheepfold has thirty-two kids, and the site is located just outside of Delmas. C2M has some projects planned to help them expand in the future. As we discussed the work being done through this home, I couldn’t help but thank [...]

Part of God’s Family

I remember a special morning in Haiti when all 120 children from the Children’s Homes came to church dressed in their school uniforms. Poyis had invited them to take an active role in this Sunday’s service, and they were clearly excited to participate. Five or six of the students were up front leading music along with the usual adult musicians, and the rest of the children sat in the first three pews, making one large choir of various ages. The twenty-person secondary school choir sat in the front, and the 100+ elementary schoolers sat behind them. [...]

The God of Creation

Just before dark one evening, I noticed that some clouds were rolling in and it looked like rain. The wind picked up, and a humid breeze swept through the compound. The storm developed slowly, and once the sun had set, I sat outside my bedroom door on the porch and watched the lightning and the rain. It was peaceful. One of the nice things about the compound is that it feels like you are miles from city life. Earlier in the day, I had walked on the roof of one of the buildings and looked out [...]

Water Truck

Since 2014, Onaville, Haiti has been home to the Connect 2 Ministries compound. The Haitian government selected Onaville to relocate people from tent cities in Port-au-Prince after the 2010 earthquake, and it has been estimated that there are 800,000 people living in this barren area. All of these factors make Onaville a unique place for ministry. Our ministry is church centric, which means that everything we do flows out of a local congregation of believers. From the Children’s Homes to the Medical Clinic, all our ministries are run by the church. Along with providing a Christian [...]

A Heart for the Nations

I went with a team from the US one day to visit the children at the Regency Home. Dr. Jarvis, one of our faithful volunteers, brought them a jump rope, and the games began. It was hot, and many were inside, but they trickled out to see us. It was fun watching Alan, a member of the team who speaks French, converse with some of the kids, especially the older ones. The children learn French, English, and Spanish in school, but will be most fluent in French and Creole as there are many in their country [...]

His Mercy Reigns

On one of our trips to Haiti, we spent a long day out and about before arriving back at the compound around 6:00 p.m. It was cloudy and threatening to rain, but the temperature felt nice. We knew the kids would love an evening outside, so Poyis brought the children out to the front of the Regency Home (the “soccer” area) and told them to run around and play. He brought out a few bikes and let some of the older ones ride them around the field. This was a special treat for them, and I [...]

2022 Shine a Light on Slavery Day

February 25 marks a global movement to Shine a Light on Slavery. People are still bought, sold, and traded in many parts of the world—often closer to home than we might think—and governments and leaders condone injustice rather than standing to protect the innocent. But even in the darkest of situations, as believers, we know there is hope. Watch this video for an encouraging look at how the light of the gospel has transformed the life of Lovinsky, one of the children from our Regency Home. “It’s amazing to know that God [...]
