Christmas This Year

On the outskirts of Port-au-Prince in Onaville this year, gangs took control. Many people were forced to leave their homes, and the kids from our Children’s Homes were among them. The last few months have brought uncertainty and challenges as a result. Because of the social and political instability in the country, this Christmas will look a little different than it has in the past for our friends in Haiti. Yet despite troubling circumstances, our children, staff, and pastors are looking ahead to December 25 with a renewed sense of unity and hope. This Christmas, the Children’s Homes and compound [...]

Hope Through Tangible Means: Creole Bibles

Owning a book in Haiti is more of a luxury than a common occurrence. The high levels of poverty mean that many families cannot afford to purchase books, and public libraries are not readily available. Limited access to books severely restricts the opportunities for individuals to engage in independent reading and self-directed learning. It also means less people have the opportunity to read the Bible. The scarcity of books has had a profound effect on what people know and believe about the world. Access to diverse reading materials offers a chance to expand a person’s understanding. Even more so, Scripture [...]

Honoring Mervile Eduardo 2008-2023

An Important Message from Our Founder Mervile Eduardo was a beloved member of our Regency Children’s Home. He passed away suddenly on December 7, 2023, at the age of fifteen, from complications related to type 1 diabetes. His diagnosis was recent, and as anyone who has experience with type 1 diabetes will know, the condition is very difficult to manage—even in the US. You can imagine how difficult it is to manage in a third-world country like Haiti. Since Mervile’s diagnosis earlier this year, Haiti has been under duress from multiple gangs, which has exacerbated the scarcity [...]

Hope Through Tangible Means: School Supplies

Tangible school supplies play a crucial role in the learning process. Using physical tools like pencils, pens, notebooks, and other materials helps students learn more than they could if relying solely on memory. Tactile activities help students take ownership of abstract ideas, and that well-known principle has guided our approach to schooling in Haiti. We’ve seen our kids benefit from these resources in so many ways. However, this year has been one of change and adaptation. As the gangs pushed into Onaville, Connect 2 Ministries moved out, leaving behind many of the resources and supplies our kids have relied on [...]

Hope Through Tangible Means: Animals

In Haiti, agricultural challenges and economic hardships are a reality year-round. Haiti’s terrain is mountainous, which limits agrarian land. In many areas, the country has also experienced soil erosion and reduced fertility over time. Even in places where agricultural farming occurs, there’s no escaping natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes. For all these reasons, farming is a risky business. That’s why at Connect 2 Ministries, we’ve focused on raising and keeping farm animals as a more sustainable solution. In the past, we’ve kept goats, chickens, and rabbits at the C2M compound. We would teach our children how to raise them [...]

Giving Tuesday 2023

Mac and Anne McGaha have served with Connect 2 Ministries for more than ten years, and they have served alongside us on many of our trips to Haiti. As we recognize Giving Tuesday, we asked the McGahas to share their thoughts on living life for others. We went to Haiti for the first time on a trip with Wheels for the World, and that's how we first met Greg. We were really impressed with how Connect 2 Ministries was working in Haiti. Everything was organized, and they knew what they were doing. That trip was the beginning of an enduring [...]

FOUND Short Film

Picture a shack. Tin roof, patched wooden walls, and a tarp for a window covering. This is Natascha's home. Her father fixes a meager meal outside over an open fire, while her brother shoos away flies from his perch on a nearby rock. Natashca is inside, hungry. She knows, as they all do, that whatever they have to eat that day will not be enough. It is never enough. With more than five children and expenses rising as they grow, Natascha’s parents must find a new way to provide. The alternative is unimaginable. This scene is a common one [...]

Kwashiorkor

“Kwashiorkor is a disease marked by severe protein malnutrition and bilateral extremity swelling. It usually affects infants and children, most often around the age of weaning through age 5. The disease is seen in very severe cases of starvation and poverty-stricken regions worldwide.”1 Kwashiorkor is a form of malnutrition, but the symptoms aren’t what we might assume. Where a distended stomach is one of the most prominent signs of traditional malnutrition, many children with Kwashiorkor actually have a passable number of calories in their diet—but they don't have enough protein. As children grow, they need protein in order to [...]

Examples of Service, Part 4

Reading about the lives and testimonies of fellow Christians offers real-life examples of faith in action. It shows us in a tangible way how believers have navigated challenges, persevered through trials, and remained steadfast in their commitment to Christ. The Bible gives us stories to help us understand God's plan for humanity and the transformative power of faith. His Word is true, and that’s been proven in the lives of people for centuries before us. In this post, we’re looking at a few examples from the New Testament Luke 15:20 “So he got up and went to his father. But [...]

Examples of Service, Part 3

Merriam Webster defines the word “serve” as: “to furnish or supply with something needed or desired.” Servants, then, are those who meet the needs or consider the desires of others. That’s the example we see in Christ, and that’s the path we’re called to walk as His followers. When we look to the needs and desires of others, we are actively striving to fulfill both the first and second greatest commandments: to love God with all our hearts, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Today, we’re considering a few more examples from the New Testament of Christians who have [...]
