Giving Tuesday 2022

Degna Horton has served with Connect 2 Ministries for more than seven years, and she has worked extensively with Regency Lighting on many of our construction projects in Haiti. As we recognize Giving Tuesday, we asked Degna to share her thoughts on living life for others. My connection with C2M began in December 2015. I was employed at Regency Lighting at the time, working as the executive assistant responsible for coordinating social impact initiatives. This was around the time Greg Barshaw shared his vision for building a home and school that would house up to [...]

The Birth of a Ministry

The 2010 earthquake changed Haiti in a way that can still be felt today. In a city of three million people, 300,000 were dead in the span of an afternoon. Tent cities became home to 1.8 million in the days that followed, and the persistent question became: “How do we make sense of this?” Tragedy raises questions that seem remote in easy times, but as Christians, we know that life and death are pressing realities in every moment, whether we think of them or not. Our ministry got its start in this context. Seeing the [...]

Director’s House Construction

I shared recently about the start of our construction work on the Children’s Homes director’s house, and I want to share a bit more of that story today. C2M has built many buildings, and it has always been helpful through the years to have American teams come to volunteer on the crew. Very few Haitians ever work with wood—they build almost everything out of concrete and block—so it’s especially valuable to have team members familiar with woodworking. We build with wood because of the earthquakes Haiti has experienced over the years; everything from the frame [...]

Answers to Prayer

I want to share with you today about some work we did on a recent construction project in Haiti. We prayed for years for the means and opportunity to build our director’s house at the Mercy Home, and on this trip, the time had come. The team and I spent our first morning on site getting things set up for the week. We put the tools and a generator in a storage room and then started to lay out the area where we would build. Our plans were to build the house approximately 40’ by [...]

2022 World Humanitarian Day

Shaina Grill has served with Connect 2 Ministries for more than eight years, and she currently serves as our Sponsorship Program & Special Events Coordinator. As we recognize World Humanitarian Day, we asked Shaina to share her thoughts on living life for others. My first trip to Haiti was my first outreach trip ever. I didn’t grow up in the church, so by the time I came to Christ, I had a young family and didn’t have an interest in serving outside of my local congregation. When our middle daughter was a senior in high [...]

Water Truck

Since 2014, Onaville, Haiti has been home to the Connect 2 Ministries compound. The Haitian government selected Onaville to relocate people from tent cities in Port-au-Prince after the 2010 earthquake, and it has been estimated that there are 800,000 people living in this barren area. All of these factors make Onaville a unique place for ministry. Our ministry is church centric, which means that everything we do flows out of a local congregation of believers. From the Children’s Homes to the Medical Clinic, all our ministries are run by the church. Along with providing a Christian [...]

He Works in the Details

One of the ways we serve our community in Haiti is by distributing food and supplies. If you’ve been around Connect 2 for long, you know that for a number of years Children’s Hunger Fund has provided Food-Pak boxes that we distribute to churches in Haiti. The primary purpose is to help the needy in the church, but these provisions also give us an opportunity to reach our communities with the gospel message as we share tangible resources. These distributions look a little different now than they have in the past. The last two years [...]

A Heart for the Nations

I went with a team from the US one day to visit the children at the Regency Home. Dr. Jarvis, one of our faithful volunteers, brought them a jump rope, and the games began. It was hot, and many were inside, but they trickled out to see us. It was fun watching Alan, a member of the team who speaks French, converse with some of the kids, especially the older ones. The children learn French, English, and Spanish in school, but will be most fluent in French and Creole as there are many in their country [...]

His Mercy Reigns

On one of our trips to Haiti, we spent a long day out and about before arriving back at the compound around 6:00 p.m. It was cloudy and threatening to rain, but the temperature felt nice. We knew the kids would love an evening outside, so Poyis brought the children out to the front of the Regency Home (the “soccer” area) and told them to run around and play. He brought out a few bikes and let some of the older ones ride them around the field. This was a special treat for them, and I [...]

New Day, New Opportunities

There are many different aspects of our ministry in Haiti, which means that you never know what tasks might come up. Each day brings new opportunities. On a recent visit to the compound, I spent the better part of a day testing the security camera system. It would probably have been a simple task under different circumstances, but a lot of the technology I had with me was incompatible with the camera system—long story short, I found a way to pull up views of the cameras and also set up an app that makes the feeds [...]
