Examples of Service, Part 2

As Christians, much of what we do is not original. We love because He loved us; we give because Christ gave all for us; we serve because we have been served so well. And that model couldn’t be more beautiful. Our Christian witness is a reflection of the ultimate care and love we have in Christ, and the same is true for the lives of every believer who’s ever lived. To that end, we’re looking today at a few more examples of service from believers in the New Testament. Acts 9:36 "In Joppa, there was a disciple named Tabitha (in [...]

Walk for Restaveks (October 2023)

One of our top goals at Connect 2 Ministries is to provide safe and loving homes for restavek children, offering them food, shelter, education, and most importantly, the love of Christ, on a daily basis. However, this goal comes with challenges. Over the last two years, the country of Haiti has faced severe social and political turmoil. We have struggled to send food and supplies in our previous capacity, and our ministry partners have felt the effects. Due to this scarcity, our Children’s Homes need both prayer and financial support, now more than ever, to continue providing care for [...]

Examples of Service, Part 1

Examples are powerful. One of the best ways we learn is by watching other people and imitating what they do, and the Bible gives us practical examples for that reason. We see good and bad models in the pages of Scripture, and those stories give us a framework to consider as we live our own lives. Today, we’re looking at some examples from the New Testament of people who served others well. Luke 10:33–34 “But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and [...]

The Cholera Crisis

According to the World Health Organization, “Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.”1 Cholera induces high-volume fluid loss that can progress to shock and ultimately death. The National Library of Medicine’s website cites an estimate of more than four million cases per year, worldwide.2 Cholera developed as a major health crisis in Haiti amid relief efforts following the 2010 earthquake. It started in a camp of foreign volunteers, probably with a leak in their sewage system. From there, the disease easily infected the ground water—and once cholera infects [...]

2023 World Humanitarian Day

John and Dawn Denton have served in international ministry for many years, and they are faithful partners of Connect 2 Ministries. As we recognize World Humanitarian Day, we asked John and Dawn to share their thoughts on gospel ministry and serving in an international context. Jesus gave us instructions at the end of Matthew to “go and make disciples” (Matt 28:19). Some might be called primarily to go to their neighbors or city, while others are called to go to the nations as well. Some of us do something in between. Our family has been blessed to share a small [...]

2023 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons resonates with the heart of Connect 2 Ministries. Each year on July 30, we join the global movement to end human trafficking as an extension of our ongoing ministry during the year. More than 120 children rescued from trafficking now call our Regency and Mercy Children’s Homes their home, living in an environment where they are loved, educated, and given a hope-filled future. Over the last two years, Haiti has experienced a prolonged period of social and political crisis. Today, we asked our founder, Greg Barshaw, to share what happens to restavek children [...]

Priorities in Serving

Over the years, our four core pillars have been the guiding principles. We are biblically focused, church centric, invested in compassionate relationships, and rooted in indigenous ministry. There’s a simple reason for that. The challenge in ministry is that if you take too broad of an approach, you end up exhausting your resources quickly and reaching less people as a result. We have seen many organizations come into Haiti and do just that. While they’ve been incredibly responsive to need, doing it without guiding principles means you spend your resources rather than investing them. It’s impossible to feed everyone or [...]

The First Five Years

Connect 2 Ministries got its start because of a God-given burden for the church in the US. Over my years in ministry, I came to believe that the church in North America had lost its passion and purpose. Church activities thrived, but outreach ministries struggled. Through many providential conversations, I came to see that some of the pastors I knew and loved felt the same about their own congregations. So, in partnership with them, C2M was born. The goal from the beginning was to help churches take people overseas. This cemented itself when a good friend of mine, a church [...]

2023 World Day Against Child Labor

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” —Romans 12:2 As Christians, it’s easy to do things that aren’t wrong in themselves, for no reason other than that they’re familiar to us. It’s easy to get caught up in the culture. But if we take Romans 12:2 literally, the patterns of this world are at odds with biblical truth. If that is true, then the question for us becomes what are [...]

Early Growth

Between 2010 and 2020, Haiti’s religious climate saw a dramatic shift. Before the 2010 earthquake, polls showed about eighty percent of people in Port-au-Prince identified as Catholic, and less than twenty percent attended evangelical churches. Ten years later, the numbers were split at fifty percent for each category. We witnessed some of those personal changes firsthand in our Mercy Network churches. People often came with testimonies of misdirected worship that had been arrested and refocused on Christ, by God’s grace. “We did our sacrifices; we paid the spirits; we paid the Voudou priests to protect us. Then the earthquake [...]
