Our primary mission field is Haiti, but in our “Missions Beyond Haiti” series, we’re examining how the logistics of ministry shift based on cultural context. In this post, I want to share some thoughts from my ministry experience in Europe, a continent with deep Christian roots now grappling with secularism.
In both Haiti and Europe, the fundamental need is for people to encounter Jesus. Whether the context is Haiti’s spiritual syncretism—blending Christianity with Voudou—or Europe’s post-Christian apathy, people everywhere are searching for hope, forgiveness, and purpose. We’ve witnessed this in Haiti through community evangelism that addresses both spiritual and physical poverty. Gospel ministry happens in the context of relationships, and in Europe, the approach is very much the same. I’ve been on many short-term trips, and relational discipleship is a common feature of them all.
The differences that show up between a place like Haiti and western regions like Europe are mainly cultural. Haiti has been devastated by poverty, natural disasters, and political instability, which means ministry will naturally integrate immediate aid measures like food distribution, educational programs, and health clinics alongside preaching and church ministry. Europe, by contrast, is affluent and educated, with a legacy of Christianity now overshadowed by secular humanism, atheism, and materialism. Opposition looks more like subtle indifference or dismissiveness. Reaching out in this context is naturally more intellectually driven—I’ve seen churches host coffee shop discussions, public question and answer sessions, and similar interactive events to open conversations.
Ultimately, missions requires humility and dependence on the Holy Spirit. While the core of gospel ministry remains the same, ministering in any context requires some strategic thinking about your audience. Paul spoke to the Greeks of the “unknown god,” meeting them on their own cultural footing to communicate a powerful truth about our savior. Whatever the context, we can look to Paul’s example and reach out to the lost well by considering the specifics of their need.
