Pastor Testimony—Pierre Jean David

“This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” —Joshua 1:8–10 Pastor Pierre Jean David Pastor Pierre Jean David knew about Jesus from a [...]

Laying a Foundation, Part 5

Laying a Foundation, Part 5 Thursday I spent the morning with a group of pastors, and we sang, prayed, and then spent some time discussing Psalm 23. One of the younger pastors posed a question about how God, who is a shepherd, could allow some in the world to suffer while others do not. You can imagine what this sparked in the room. I was able to briefly walk through Scripture and explain how God is sovereign, showing that the Bible points to Jesus as the perfect example of suffering, giving us a model [...]

Laying a Foundation, Part 4

Laying a Foundation, Part 4 Tuesday We arrived at the church early and were greeted immediately by more of the church members, ready to help with whatever was needed. All of the posts were in the ground, and the main objective of the day was to build the forty-foot center beam (along with cutting and placing all of the side beams). This would take all day. I was very impressed by our men; they were eager to work and to get things done. While the building continued at full force, Poyis [...]

Laying a Foundation, Part 3

Laying a Foundation, Part 3 Monday The team was up early and ready to get going. We ate a nice breakfast, spent some quality time together as a group, and started loading the van so that we could be on the road first thing—and then, the van wouldn’t start. Over the span of about half an hour, I watched the Haitian world and the American world collide. The Americans were antsy to start the day, and the Haitians were rolling with the circumstances. When Poyis arrived, he stopped a moment, put his [...]

Laying a Foundation, Part 2

Laying a Foundation, Part 2 Sunday, continued It’s not often that we get a rainstorm during the day, but we continued our Sunday in a pleasant tropical shower. I led some of the team on a tour of the Vocational Training Center, which is still in the works. Getting the lay of the land really communicates the ministry’s vision: the facility includes centers for sewing, woodworking, automotive repair, tiling, computer access, and culinary arts (with an amazing kitchen), all designed to equip our students for future life and work. I look forward [...]

Laying a Foundation, Part 1

Laying a Foundation, Part 1 Last November Late last year, one of our teams had the opportunity to work alongside Pastor Poyis and his staff to build a church and continue building relationships with the kids in our Children’s Homes. Seeing God’s work through this ministry is a blessing, and I hope these stories are as encouraging to you as they are to me! Saturday On the flight to Port-au-Prince, many of the Haitians around us started talking loudly back and forth to each other. We couldn't make sense of [...]

Praying Persistently

Praying Persistently During my visit to Haiti in September with a small volunteer team, I wasn’t expecting Poyis to ask me to preach on Sunday. So when he did, I thought he was joking. He wasn’t. Our philosophy at Connect 2 is to NOT have Americans preach because we want Haitians to see their own preachers bring God’s Word. I checked with Greg and both of us agreed that it would be good for me to be visible in front of the church, so they will know who I am.  Fortunately, you learn [...]

Building Hope for a Bigger Future, Part 5

Building Hope for a Bigger Future, Part 1 Friday Afternoon Lunch came. It really helped to eat and rest a little sitting at the table. The temperature was 93, but the humidity made it feel like it was over 100. We got back to the Mercy Home around 1:30, and we were back at it by 1:45. But, right before we started, a really neat thing happened. In fact, this was one of the best highlights of the trip… Pastor Poyis, brought many of the Secondary School boys and girls over from the [...]

Building Hope for a Bigger Future, Part 4

Building Hope for a Bigger Future, Part 4 Friday Morning We started off the morning together and I shared a devotional from Psalm 2 and Revelation 1. The passages gave a picture that the most central part of being a Christian is Christ and submission to  Christ. From before the foundation, through the writing of the Old Testament and Prophets, through His birth, life on earth, burial, and resurrection, until His heavenly state in Revelation 1, Christ is central. Christ is the reason we do what we do each day, and we [...]

Building Hope for a Bigger Future, Part 3

Building Hope for a Bigger Future, Part 3 Thursday The goal for the afternoon was to put all of the beams on top of the posts. This was a big challenge because the beams were to be put on top of the posts which were at least 14 feet high and the beams were heavy. The plan was to have Allan and Dr. J cut the tops off the posts and then have John, Troy, Adam, Chuck and me come behind. Troy, Adam, and John were going to climb the ladder as one beam [...]
