Haiti at night, bright star in sky

One of the most practical ways we serve the church in Haiti is through short-term ministry trips. Teams from our US partner churches come to serve and encourage the church in Haiti in a variety of ways, and it’s always a refreshing time for those involved. Today, we asked John, one of the volunteers from our January team, to share some reflections from the trip.

I first got involved with Connect 2 Ministries through Antioch Church, and it’s been a privilege to be part of the ministry happening in Haiti. The trip had multiple highlights—getting the pump going for the girls’ dorm, making bunk beds and school desks, building a relationship with Pastor Poyis, and sharing God’s love made for a memorable few days. I’ve shared my trip with everyone I’ve come in contact with since getting home.

The trip went smoothly overall, although getting material in Haiti was a challenge. I was working on getting water to the girls’ dorm, and there were multiple issues with parts, leaks, clogs, and rain. After a couple days of this, I finally got water running to the girls’ bathroom. I screwed on the shower head with about ten girls watching me, and I said “Girls, watch this” (very animated). The water came out of the shower head, and the girls literally screamed with joy. They thanked me every time they passed me for the rest of the trip. It was really sweet.

Being part of a team trip is an opportunity to live out the Great Commission. Going and supporting the church as needed, wherever you find yourself, is a huge part of God’s plan for making disciples, and it’s encouraging on a personal level to see the love of God for His church in a different context. I came away from this trip excited about the work God is doing in Haiti.
