One of the most practical ways we serve the church in Haiti is through short-term ministry trips. Teams from our US partner churches come to serve and encourage the church in Haiti in a variety of ways, and it’s always a refreshing time for those involved. Today, we asked Kevin, one of the volunteers from our April team, to share some reflections from the trip.

Our focus on this trip was installing the electrical wiring, and we got a lot of stuff done. We were able to run a lot of wiring before we realized we were short on some electrical supplies. At that point, we pivoted to setting posts and installing the roof on the shed. Overall, it was a productive trip, and our team was a fun group as well. Everyone knew each other at least a little already, and that made the work dynamic seamless.

My first trip to Haiti was in January of this year, and it’s been exciting to see progress even in that short a span of time. Because they’ve been building from ground zero at this new property, everything is a major improvement. In January, the kids weren’t in school, and everything was still being set up. They didn’t even have desks or beds, so to go from sleeping on church pews and concrete floors to having beds and being enrolled in school (complete with uniforms) has been really exciting to see.

It’s encouraging to see the staff and teachers interacting with the kids. Julio specifically is amazing with the children. He gets along with them so well, and then is out there working with us throughout the day as well. He has such an infectious, positive attitude. He’s happy all the time, working with a smile on his face. January was a great trip because we got a lot of work done and got to meet the kids. But seeing them now, in full swing—doing school and connecting with their teachers—was a picture of ministry in action.
